Uniquely You: Perspectives

The evidence is clear, coming from a wide variety of sources and an array of subject fields, from neuroscience and psychology, to physics and philosophy, sociology and metaphysics, and a wide range of spiritual disciplines, that our reality, or rather our perception of reality, is a lot more flexible, creative, and personal than we, as a species, and often individually, have believed and understood. Not only are our individual experiences of reality literally 1 in an infinite number of potential and possible experiences to be had, completely unique and personal onto themselves, but the “reality” that we experience as fixed and true for us collectivity is only based on a few agreements that keep up from fully recognizing the fact that our lives can be as free and flexible or as restricted and crystallized as we choose and allow them to be, the fact that we have the power to choose how we desire to experience our individual personal lives.

Our realities are the unique expression of who we are/who we have chosen to be at any given moment in time and at any level of our development, which might explain why as we grow and develop, both literally and metaphorically, our views of the world, our environment, our lifestyle, appearance, and even the people we interact with, shift and change in ways that are quite unique to that particular time…So much so, that even if we  attempt to recreate certain aspects from our past through the faculties of our mind (going back and trying to relive the “experiences of our youth,” for example), an exact replica of this experience is almost impossible to recreate, since it will always now include the person we have become.

What this means is that even as we maintain our unique and seemingly consistent perceptive (or point-of-view in/from our individual physical bodies) throughout our life, this perspective is–as we are in every way, shape and form always becoming a fuller more developed version of our self–changing, even while maintaining its distinctiveness and essence.

In the same way that one may sit and view a tree on a windy Autumn day changing before her eyes, our personal/individual growth/shifts in perspectives is quite observable, although it simultaneously feels so effortless and seamless that we are sometimes unaware that it is occurring. Our growth, and therefore our shift in perspective, is so natural to us that many often spend a whole lifetime never consciously perceiving it.

As humans, we grow from infant to child, and from child to adolescent, from adolescent to adult, exist from year to year, hour to hour, moment to moment, often taking for granted the dramatic shifts that occur in and through us as our life progresses. For many, the only time in which they actually pause and acknowledge these shifts is in the “once in a while,” when they may sift through old photos and gasp at how much they have grown. But for the most part, most humans (at least up until this particular time in our history) have been quite unaware of the unfolding of their ever shifting perspectives as they move through life experience.

But why does this really matter?

Well, simply put, we are creating ourselves and our realities through our experience and perception of our lives (and everything in it), which means that if one is seeking more control over his/her creations/experiences, the first step involved is to become aware of this “phenomena” of constantly shifting perspective. Before starting something new, changing one’s perspective on life–and thus where he/she is going–one must start at the very beginning, which is ironically, and conveniently, located in the present, here-and-now. Because your perspective is automatically new in every moment, each moment is an opportunity to shift in the direction of the life that you desire/the person you internally know yourself to be/naturally are. Each moment is an opportunity to fully live your truth.

The first step of consciously creating is to pause and become aware of the development/shift that is taking place even as you breathe and exist right now, a shift which although it is inevitable, is not at all invisible. Like the tree that one can watch change from green to orange in the fall, or days that one can observe become shorter as the temperatures become cooler, our personal perspective and growth can be, if we pay close enough attention, experienced consciously moment by moment. And because it is from this point that we have the power to move in the direction that we desire, it becomes even more important for us to become aware of/in this now-moment.

I invite you to pause for a second and become present.

Feel your body, wiggle your toes, stand up and move around the room, take a deep breath, feel your Self.

What thoughts are going through your mind right now? Can you simply let them pass? Maybe there is something else that you would rather be thinking. Can you switch to that thought immediately or stop your thoughts altogether?

If you are having a hard time becoming present, then I suggest that you follow the advice of one of my favorite teachers:

Let go of your focus on who you think you are, what you think the world is, what you need to be doing, where you need to go, how you need to behave, and feel yourself being and becoming as you breathe.

~~~
Now ponder the following questions as you continue with your day:
Who am I becoming? Do I like where I am going? Where do I choose to go from here?
